Procter and Gamble – new environmentally friendly packaging

Household goods, beauty and grooming product supplier Procter and Gamble (P&G), announced on August 12 the launch of new environmentally friendly packaging for its Pantene Pro V, Covergirl and Max Factor Brands.

The new environmentally friendly packaging is made from sugarcane-derived plastic, which is a renewable source unlike traditional plastic which is made from non renewable petroleum. Sugarcane -derived plastics are 100% recyclable in existing recycling facilities.

The newly packaged products will be rolled out over the next two years with the first products expected to appear on the shelves in 2011.

The development and widespread implementation of environmentally friendly packaging such as sugarcane-derived plastics could help to reduce both oil consumption and the release of pollutants such as phthalates associated with plastic production.

EcoSquid provides recycling comparator for e-waste

EcoSquid is now offering a new website that can help consumers locate the best options for recycling or selling their used electronics.

The solution, which comes in the wake of many regulators, manufacturers and environmentalists beginning to stress the need for better electronic waste management, will help householders recycle old electronics in a more sustainable manner. The EcoSquid website is part of a larger ‘eCycling’ website ring sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The company has said that at present just 20 per cent of all e-waste is recycled each year. A majority of the e-waste that goes unrecycled is sitting in drawers and garages in UK households across the country.

Government will pilot voluntary responsbility deals for business waste management

A new scheme was announced earlier this month by recycling minister Lord Henley that will allow Courtauld-style voluntary contracts designed to cut down on commercial waste and minimise the need for further regulation.

The Government has said it will plan to incorporate businesses into a voluntary responsibility deal that will mirror the Courtauld Commitment. Aimed at reducing industrial and commercial waste, the agreement will see that businesses take responsibility for the sustainable disposal of all waste generated by the operations.

Geothermal power plant in Corwall given the green light

A geothermal power plant project in Cornwall has received the green light to begin construction. The power facility, which will use water pumped into rocks as a means to generate hot water and steam to create electricity, will be built at the St Day industrial estate.

Currently, the site features a molten rock that sits at 170C about 5,000m into the earth’s crust. The geothermal facility will utilise an industrial strength drill to pump water down and have it return as steam and boiling water to create energy.

The £40m endeavor will be able to produce enough electricity to power 20 schools and around 20,000 homes when operating at full capacity.

Top 7 Tips to Make Your Home Eco Friendly

Being green isn’t rocket science, follow our top tips below and help protect our world and your wallet.

1.    Did you know that your fridge wastes at least 30 kilo watts per hour of energy every month.  This is because every time you open the door all that lovely cold air escapes.  Down in the antipodeans an Australian inventor has created a top opening freezer into an incredibly efficient fridge.  It only runs for a minute or two an hour to keep its temperature, this is because gravity leaves the cold air inside even if you leave the door wide open.  Now we need a clever designer to build one where we can access all the food inside easily, sliding doors could be perfect for this.

2.    The average temperature of a house today is 22C, in the 1950’s it used to be 18C.  It seems our expectations are to happily walk around our house in t-shirts and socks.  An extra layer and some warm slippers will not only help our environment but also our wallet.  If you turn down your heating by 1 degree you will save yourself 3% of heating costs.  Bring the temperature back down to 18C and you will save over 10% on your heating bills.

UK Launches Eco-Friendly Car Fueled by Human Waste

First we had the car fueled by coffee beans, now we have a car fueled by something far less pleasant but just as effective – human sewage.

It might sound gross but the team behind theVolkswagen Beetle Bio-Bug believe it will overtake the electric car and pave the way for a green motoring revolution, thanks to its reliability and the fact that it looks and drives like a regular car.

As reported by BBC News, the car was developed by Mohammed Saddiq from the sustainable energy firm GENeco, to make use of the extra biogas they had at Wessex Water’s sewage plant in Bristol.

Eco Friendly Products Using Clean Energy to Power the Green Evolution

Eco technology can realize the goals of the revolution to promote a green earth. The Go Green revolution tried to inspire people to save the earth, the trees, and life-sustaining ecologies. Unfortunately, modern societies are so far removed from the earth, the trees and the environment that now the term “green” conjures only faint images of people who would abandon technology and society to live caveman-like in the wild, or recyclers vainly trying to make people fall in love with old used stuff.

Go Green fails to change lifestyles because our lifestyles are so technologically engrossed that Cell Phones and iPods and HD TVs get more reaction than anything else… except for LOWER COST, CONVENIENCE, SAVE MONEY. Big energy count on these old refrains to keep everyone rooted in modern world realities whenever “Green” threatens their little kingdoms.

The time has come for Go Green to evolve…
