Can I catch mice and be green?

Let’s not dwell on what he did afterwards, but the Pied Piper’s initial pest-control mission was effective and eco friendly (just one wooden recorder). It’s strange: pet mice are theoretically governed by animal welfare legislation, laboratory mice are regulated, but rodent mice you can kill at will.

It’s all to do with context: pet- rescue charity furryfriendsrescue.co.uk recently “rehomed” 3,000 mice after things got out of control with two pet mice in a cage, but I doubt that they would want to hear about non-pet infestations.

The acknowledged expert in humane wildlife pest control is jbryant.co.uk (it also offers the death-free removal of squirrels and foxes). As for DIY options, snap traps and glue boards should be banned. When animals get stuck on the latter they sometimes chew through their own limbs.

Eco-Friendly Computing: 5 Things to Look For When Buying a PC

Evidence of the eco-shift, wherein more people are turning to eco-friendly products, can be found even in the consumer electronics market. When buying a PC, you have countless options. It’s important to know what to look for so you can make an environment-friendly choice.

1. Look for one that uses less overall power. Note the computer specification information—many computer models are energy star-compliant. This compliance is an indication of their green certificate, which means these computers have lower standby power in comparision to others.

2. Learn how much electricity the computer consumes, in both sleep and standby modes. Check if the computer uses less than 4 watts in sleep mode and less then 150-340 watts in active mode. This will not only help you save power, it will also save you in electricity costs.

3. Choose a flat panel monitor. Since they use less energy compared to projection monitors, flat panel monitors are eco-friendly.

4. Use a keyboard that has hot keys for screen brightness adjustment. It takes less power to set your display on 80% brightness, and having hot keys will make it easy for you to adjust the brightness according to the light environment you’re in.

5. Buy a high-quality computer that uses hardware or software that can be upgraded if necessary. A high-quality computer that lasts long will cut your costs in buying new systems every year. This, in turn, will lessen technological waste.

Satellite blasts off on mission to map the Earth's melting ice

A hi-tech European satellite designed to measure how fast the Earth’s polar ice caps are melting was successfully launched into orbit nearly five years after the first attempt at such a mission ended in spectacular failure.

CryoSat-2, which was designed and built in France and Germany but masterminded by British scientists, blasted off on a Russian launcher rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan shortly before 3pm on 8th April. Some time later, a tracking station in Africa picked up the satellite’s signal, confirming that it had gone into orbit.

Businesses across the UK are starting to prioritise green initiatives, according to research by recruitment agency Spring Personnel.

The study revealed that 87% of firms questioned have an active interest in environmental issues, while a further 12% say they are becoming more aware of the green agenda.

However, fewer firms are currently implementing travel-related schemes, with just 22% of businesses questioned operating cycle to work schemes.

Solar plane takes to the skies for the first time

The world’s first solar airplane, the Solar Impulse, passed its first flight test with flying colors — in preparation for a round-the-world trip. The next step will be to see if it’s capable of staying aloft in the dark.

The plane itself is a sight to see, with the same 200-foot wingspan as a Boeing 747, covered in 12,000 solar panels. The cockpit is comparably tiny, and the total machine weighs just 1.7 tons. Its 40-horsepower engine doesn’t take it nearly as fast and far as its fuel-powered peers. During today’s test, lasting just under an hour and a half in the air, it reached a top speed of 44 miles per hour and an altitude of about 4,000 feet.
